brief outline (version 2016-2017)

  • These web pages briefly outline the book entitled "Handbook of Mathematics" (published on May 23, 2017 for ebook, on April 4, 2017 for hardcover, on Dec. 7, 2016 for softcover). The reasons for this book are numerous, one of them is to revive the tradition of handbooks; another one is to give, as much as possible, the proof of theorems, which is uncommon for handbooks of mathematics.

  • The book consists of 11 Parts and 28 Chapters covering all areas of mathematics.

  • It is a tool for readers who have to deal with mathematics, for students, scientists, students of many disciplines, engineers, teachers, professionals, writers and also for a general reader with an interest in mathematics and in science, as well as for beginners.

  • It provides a wide range of mathematical concepts, definitions, propositions, theorems, proofs, and numerous illustrations. Difficulty level can vary depending on chapters, and sustained attention will be required for some.

  • The list of Parts is quite classical:

I. Foundations of Mathematics,

II. Algebra,

III. Number Theory,

IV. Geometry,

V. Analytic Geometry,

VI. Topology,

VII. Algebraic Topology,

VIII. Analysis,

IX. Category Theory,

X. Probability and Statistics,

XI. Applied Mathematics,

Appendices, index.

  • Appendices provide useful lists of symbols and tables for ready reference.

  • A vast index consistently lists all the notions described and defined throughout the book.

  • The publisher’s hope is that this book, slightly revised and in a convenient format, will serve the needs of readers, be it for study, teaching, exploration, work, or research.
